So it seems finding knee pads specifically for crawling is quite a challenge! You see kids knee pads on the market are designed as protective gear for riding, scooting and even motor cross. Most have hard plastic protectors that aren’t too comfy and they slip slide around on non carpeted flooring – which Mikey thinks is quite funny.
Without knee pads Mikey’s poor little knees are bruised and grazed and his feet and shins are the same. Like many kids with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Mikey doesn’t crawl in the traditional pattern. He doesn’t lift his knees and legs, he drags them along the floor – you can imagine how uncomfortable that is without protection.
We have tried Mikey with numerous knee pads including those form Kmart, Wiggle Sport and Amazon and we have finally found a winner!
We are really happy with Mikey’s Simply Kids knee pads off Amazon. We first tried their 1st generation knee pads in size medium, but they moved around too much and we were constantly repositioning them. Then we tried the 2nd generation knee and shin pads and… ding, ding, ding we have a winner! These are perfect to protect not only Mikey’s knees but also his shins that get dragged along the ground.
There is no slippery plastic knee caps and there is enough padding for Mikey to be comfortable.
The size medium is perfect for Mikey right now. The straps are way too long but hopefully this means we will get a lot of use out of them. They do need repositioning as they still slide down sometimes, but much less than anything else we have tried.
They come in a pack which also includes elbow pads and little gloves. Mikey is pictured wearing the blue camo colour and they are available in other colours:
