New WA Museum Boola Bardip
The new and improved WA Museum Boola Bardip is now open and we were super excited to go and check it out.
While we love going out for adventures and exploring sunny Perth, we struggle to find fun, accessible activities that are inclusive for Mikey to enjoy.
I wasn’t sure how Mikey would go at the museum, particularly in the school holidays – lots of people, lots of noise and I thought overall he might just find it boring.
I was pleasantly surprised that there were a number of things Mikey could enjoy. In typical Mikey fashion he really wanted to touch every screen he saw. Luckily most of them were positioned quite low, so he could interact with them.
We all really enjoyed the Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters exhibition. While I really enjoyed following the story, Mikey really enjoyed the digital projections, which were amazing.
We rushed through many parts of the museum as Mikey was clearly bored – I’m sure all kids are at some point!
- ACCESS – Physical access into the museum is great, flat, wide and easy to get around.
- TOILETS – This was a big issue. All levels have universal access toilets. That means there is one single larger unisex toilet that also has a baby change facility. There is no change table, no hoist – no way to change a child or adult who can’t stand. Only a small baby change table that folds down from the wall. This was incredibly disappointing. I even checked with some staff members as I thought I must have missed it, I did not. A newly renovated museum and no suitable restroom, such a shame.
Overall we enjoyed our experience at the WA Museum Boola Bardip but won’t be rushing back as there wasn’t quite enough to keep Mikey really engaged.
